Spring baskets with iris & blossom
A focus on using the seasonal flowers, iris and blossom. We will look at the near view water landscape using blue iris which can also represent the 5th day of the 5th month; the 'Boys Day'. Iris represents tall upright young men and the leaves are their swords - representing courage.
Early Summer Landscape
Creating landscape typically uses Moribana styles like water reflecting and near view upright. This class looks at creating landscape to represent early summer time. We will use seasonal flowers to create different arrangements. In this session, we will experiment with different materials whilst learning the key principle of the Ikebana technique.
Freestyle using glass containers
Freestyle allows you the freedom to break the rules. We will specifically look at breaking these rules in the use of glass containers. Whilst there is room for creativity, we will look at staying within the Ikebana principles.
Moribana - Upright, Slanting and Water Reflecting
Created by the Ohara School, we will look at all of the Moribanas, the upright, the slanting and water reflecting. The ‘Moribana’ progresses to three lines and 3 materials. Upright Moribana: typically features materials arranged in a straight, upward direction. Slanting Moribana: in contrast to the straight lines of Upright Moribana, Slanting Moribana features materials arranged diagonally or at an angle. This arrangement conveys a sense of movement and dynamism, suggesting natural elements like wind or flowing water. Water Reflecting Moribana: Inspired by the reflection of objects in water, this form aims to create a serene and harmonious composition. Materials are arranged low in the container, with some extending horizontally over the waterline. You will get to know the different features and characteristics of the designs and put these into action by creating your own arrangement.
Hana Mai and Hana Kanade
"Hana Mai" is a sculpture as opposed to a flower arrangement and the name translates to ‘dancing flowers’. "Hana Kanade" is a new arrangement designed by the new headmaster and involves crossing lines. You will dive into the intricacies of these arrangements and create a piece yourself to further develop your understand and skillset.
Rimpa for senior students. Advanced Hana Isho, One Row and Circular for beginners and above.

The particular features of Rimpa, a traditional Japanese art style, put emphasis on nature. The use of vibrant colours, and layering techniques create a sense of depth and richness in the artwork. Additionally, the portrayal of seasonal changes and the concept of wabi-sabi, embracing imperfections, further enhance the timeless beauty and tranquility of Rimpa art. The Rimpa arrangement will incorporate the materials in the paintings which you will get to know in this class. For beginners and above, we will look at Hana Isho, One Row and Circular. Everyone will follow the prescriptive rule for the traditional colour scheme arrangement. There are ten materials and one of the materials must be in the traditional colour scheme arrangement.
